Design Overview

With the advent of cloud computing, the functionality of the database processing system is hidden inside the computing cloud with the features exposed as a set of Webservices that can be used to build many different applications.

The majority of today's web applications have been built as isolated systems using a variety of different frameworks and programming skills. Most do not meet any of the standards and patterns that are used in the larger commercial systems, leaving the applications vulnerable to security breaches, and failures that might expose personal information or simply take down a company's web presence.

The need for the environment that RainCloud will provide has been building ever since the web started to evolve into a mass of independent websites with their own digital distribution systems.

Other than the administrative interface, the bulk of RainCloud will be built inside the "cloud". It will provide a Data Dictionary coupled with a Business Rules Engine, Content Management services and utility services

Solutions from RainCloud enable quick and robust application development without the need to design and host the complex back-end database technologies. In most digital content sites today, the majority of the time is spent analyzing and developing the client's storage and distribution needs, and preparing IT solutions. A service like RainCloud cuts through the traditional complex IT and database backend issues, so that time and energy is spent coding for the core purpose of the site. Re-useable libraries, data dictionary entries and sets of business rules will be called through the web services, the RainCloud API.

In addition to re-inventing the wheel scenarios, there are other serious problems with isolation. Companies with multiple applications and websites find themselves trying to bridge between the websites and there is no smooth way to share content with a pooled community of other companies. RainCloud takes the bridges out of backend isolated solutions. Also, applications can scale based upon the virtual server environment inside the cloud, something that will be completely transparent to the developer and the client.
